Koti of Mozambique

Koti of Mozambique The Koti tribe lives in Angoche District and in the coastal area of Angoche Island. There is also one community in the city of Nampula. They don't share the same language as neighboring groups, although many can use Makhuwa in the main villages for communication and trade. There are cultural similarities with some differences in rituals and family customs. Their subsistence activities are agriculture, trading, and fishing. A "Regulo" is the traditional local leader. The majority is Muslim and small minorities practice ethnic religions and Christianity. There is no syncretism between Islam and Christianity, although both are mixed with animistic beliefs. Ministry Obstacles The level of literacy in this tribe is probably quite low. Even though scripture portions are available in their language, oral communication of spiritual truths is needed. Outreach Ideas There are a number of individuals in this tribe who identify themselves as Christians. Perhaps workers can disciple these people to become mature in the faith, mature enough to take the Gospel to the remainder of their tribe.
