Bhampta of India

Bhampta of India Bhamtas have two main divisions: Chhatri Bhamtas, who are usually immigrants from Gujarat, and those of the Maratha country, who are often known as Bhamtis. The Bhamtas were formerly notorious thieves, but many of the caste are now engaged in the cultivation of hemp, from which they make ropes, mats, and gunny-bags. In the past, both men and women have been petty thieves and pickpockets. They were very clever in adopting disguises, and dressing as members of another caste. Bhamtas practice both infant and adult marriages. Polygamy is permitted. Bhamtas worship Mari Ayi. Before a wedding, goats and fowls are killed as sacrifice to the dieties Mari Ayi and Tuljhapur Bhawani. Ministry Obstacles Even though this community is small, they speak a number of languages. Each language subgroup may require its own evangelistic effort. Pray the Lord will use this method to call many to himself. Pray for the followers of Christ There are probably no followers of Jesus today among the Bhampti community. None have identified themselves as Christians to the Indian census. However, please pray for those the Lord is calling to himself. Pray they will hear the way of salvation with understanding and faith. Pray for the entire people group Pray the Bhampta will completely turn away from their past history of thievery and immorality, and yearn for righteousness.
