Bania, Agarwal in India
The Agarwal Bania live mainly in Rajasthan state. A
generic term for some communities, the name Bania has been derived from
the Sanskrit word vanik, meaning trading. They trace their history back
about 5000 years. Their traditional occupations are moneylending,
shopkeeping, trade, and business. The Bania society is a stratified one.
Social divisions regulate marriages among most of the communities.
Widow remarriage is allowed only among about half of Bania communities.
In about one fourth of Bania communities, women enjoy equal status with
men.Ministry Obstacles The Agarwal Bania speak well over 30 languages. Provision must be made for these language subdivisions of the community as the good news of Jesus is taken to them. Outreach Ideas Evangelists and church planters can carry the good news of Jesus to the Agarwal community using any number of good resources, such as the EvangeCube, and Gospel recordings and films. These should be available in most of the languages spoken by the Agarwal. Pray for the followers of Christ There are few if any followers of Jesus among the Agarwal Bania community. However, pray for the many individuals whom the Lord will soon call to himself. Pray they will be properly taught how to know and follow Christ. Pray they will lead honorable lives, being an excellent testimony to Christ. Pray for the entire people group Pray that the Agarwal Bania community may be able to care properly for their families, for employment opportunities, for good quality schools for their children, and that the indigent may be cared for.
