Penghulu of Indonesia

It is thought that this group came from West Sumatra to Jambi in the 15th century, and came as gold seekers. Their main livelihood is cultivating rice paddies and non-irrigated fields. They also produce woven handicrafts consisting of balls, floor mats, baskets, bowls, and winnowing trays. Additionally, the Penghulu make metalwork handicrafts such as knives, axes, cleavers, and adzes. The Penghulu are led by a board of elders with representatives from each extended family. Though in general the Penghulu are Muslims, they still cling to traditional animistic beliefs for everyday life. They believe that strong spirits inhabit sacred sites. Some are still in the habit of giving offerings to appease the spirits. Many people seek help from the shaman for daily needs like treating the sick or casting out evil spirits.

Ministry Obstacles
The Penghulu lack an understanding of who Jesus truly is. They need to know that he is deity, the Son of God.

Outreach Ideas
Pray that some youth in this tribe will download scripture and the Jesus film from the Internet, as well as Gospel recordings. Pray the Lord will give them understanding as they read and view these resources.

Pray for the followers of Christ
There are no known followers of Jesus today among the Penghulu. Pray the Lord will soon stir the hearts of many to find a Savior from their sin, and learn that Isa (Jesus) as he is known in the Koran is that Savior and not just another prophet.

Pray for the entire people group
The Penghulu need help in becoming better equipped to develop their natural resources (forestry as well as gold mining), so that products can be processed in a way that yields the best balance of financial profit and social welfare. They also need capital to increase their agricultural yields.
