Chhetri of Nepal
The name Chettri
is a corrupt form of the Sanskrit word kshatriya, which means warrior.
After a child's birth, the name-giving (nauran), tonsure (mundan), and
first feeding of rice (annaprasan) ceremonies are performed. As part of
the marriage rituals, the bridal couple is made to sit together before
the holy fire while a Brahman priest worships the sacred fire (yagya).
This is followed by the exchange of garlands and rings. They worship
Pasu-patinath, Kali, Durga, etc. Satyanarayan is worshipped as the
family deity. The literacy level among the older generation is low, but
young boys and girls attend school.
Ministry Obstacles
Spiritual opposition can be assumed as Jesus is presented to the Hindu Chhetri. Pray against this, so people will experience freedom to understand and believe.
Outreach Ideas
This large people group needs a substantial number of workers, and many ways to present the good news of Jesus to them. Please pray for all that will be needed for each individual in the community to hear the Gospel in ways they understand and will accept.
Pray for the followers of Christ
A few Chhetri have reported themselves as Christians to the Nepal census. These individuals need prayer support. Please pray the Lord will give them understanding as they read or listen to scripture. Pray they will clearly understand the Gospel of grace offered through faith in Jesus.
Pray for the entire people group
Pray for a rising literacy rate among the Chhetri community, and for improved medical care.
