Jola-Fonyi of Guinea-Bissau

Jola-Fonyi of Guinea-Bissau
The Jola are a friendly people who are very relaxed and known for their charm towards strangers. Family relationships are very strong. They prefer to marry cousins and ask for the bride price in the form of livestock. Polygamy is common. Primarily farmers, the Jola raise a variety of vegetables as well as manioc and rice. They also raise sheep, cattle, and goats. More than 90% of the Jola claim to be Muslim, although African traditional practices are mixed with it. Traditional Islamic beliefs have been changed from the true meaning in order to fit pre-existing fears and beliefs. Their desire to follow Allah is because of fear, not love.
Ministry Obstacles
A low literacy rate suggests the Gospel of Christ needs to come with an emphasis on oral presentation.
Outreach Ideas
Christians can visit the Jola, telling stories from scripture and using various tools such as the Jesus film. Scripture portions are available in the language of the people. Existing Christians need to be strengthened.
Pray for the followers of Christ
Pray the few followers of Christ among the Jola-Fonyi tribe will learn to quickly confess sin and to live in the power of God's Spirit.
Pray for the entire people group
Pray for improved health care, for employment opportunities, and for good harvests for the Jola people. Pray that peace will reign in the Casamance region where many Jola reside.
Scripture Focus
"The time is coming to gather all nations and tongues. And they shall come and see My glory." Isaiah 66:18
