Gurung in Nepal The term Gurungs use for themselves is "Tamu". There are conflicting reports as to the origins of the Gurung. Some say their ancestors came from Tibet, while others say their ancestors came from India. Their belief system is complicated. Originally they were shamanists, before being converted to Tibetan Buddhism. Since the advance of the Hindu world into their area in the 18th century, the Gurung have gradually become Hinduized.
