Daya in Indonesia
Daya homes are mostly found in the southern and
western foothills and mountains of the Bukit Barisan range of Sumatra.
Daya houses usually consist of a bedroom and a large guest room. The
floor and walls are made of wood or bamboo. The roof is often made of
coconut palm leaves layered with clay. Although the influence of Islam
is strong upon the culture of the Daya, they also maintain animistic
beliefs. Many Daya use amulets with written verses from the Qur'an. A
dukun (shaman/healer/occultist) is often called to heal the sick and
cast out evil spirits.Ministry Obstacles
There is often fear involved when people consider leaving their religion: fear of spirits, fear of other people.
Outreach Ideas
Many good resources are available in the language of the Daya people. Gospel films are available, as well as printed material and recordings. These can all be useful, but workers are needed.
Pray for the followers of Christ
Pray the few followers of Christ among the Daya community will faithfully fellowship together. Pray they will put off falsehood and speak truthfully to one another, in love. Pray they will be protected from temptations.
Pray for the entire people group
The physical needs of the Daya are great. One third of the Daya live below the poverty level. They seriously require help in the areas of health and drinking water. Besides this, they need educational assistance in the form of teachers, school equipment and supplies, school buildings and other community facilities for children.
Scripture Focus
"Tell of His glory among the nations, His wonderful deeds among all the peoples. For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised." 1 Chronicles 16:24-25
