Dzala of Bhutan The Dzala people live in the highlands along the upper course of the Kholongchu River. This part of Bhutan is extremely poor. Visitors have said it is like stepping back to medieval times. Some Dzala refer to themselves as the Khoma people, and their language as Khomakha. Tibetan Buddhism has been followed by more than 1,300 years, entering Bhutan from Tibet. Visits from lamas and monks from Tibet, India and Nepal have maintained and strengthened Buddhism over the centuries. The people see their identity and culture as completely intertwined with Buddhism.
