Darjee in Nepal
A migrant community, the Darjee are sometimes known
as Damai. They are non-vegetarian, and rice is their staple cereal. The
Darjee women play a significant role in their economy by plucking
tea-leaves in tea gardens for wages. The traditional occupation of the
Darjee is tailoring. They regard the Kuldevta as their household deity
and also worship Vandevta. The Darjee are traditional musicians. The
Nepali Brahmin do not accept water from the Darjee, but the Sarki, Kami,
etc. accept water from them.Ministry Obstacles The Darjee had a literacy rate of 31% in the 1981 census, and has probably not improved much since then. Outreach Ideas Pray for workers to carry the Gospel of Christ to these people, especially in oral form. Several exposures to the Gospel message are usually required. Pray for the followers of Christ Pray for the few followers of Christ among this low caste community, that they will follow Christ with zeal and holiness. Pray they will be rooted and established in love. Pray for the entire people group Pray for the Darjee community to increasingly be drawn to the man Jesus Christ, to be curious about him and his teachings. Scripture Focus "All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats." Matthew 25:32 |
