Tamil of Singapore
The majority of
Indian migrant workers living in Singapore come from Tamil Nadu villages
in southern India. These Indian migrant workers are scattered
throughout Singapore in approximately three hundred work sites. Many
workers are educated and literate, while others are illiterate. Life in
Singapore is tough for migrant workers. They generally work six to seven
days a week. Some migrant workers live in well-built flats, but a
majority are poorly housed and live in small shacks or containers.
Migrant workers can be exploited by their employers who take advantage
of loopholes in the legal system. Due to hard work, pressure, loan
repayment, new-found freedom, or loneliness, many migrant workers resort
to alcoholism, prostitution, and gambling.
Ministry Obstacles
Nominal Christians in Singapore do not provide a good example to the Tamil of what being a Christian is supposed to mean.
Outreach Ideas
There are many evangelical Christians in Singapore. Perhaps the Lord will show some their opportunity and responsibility to minister to Tamil speakers. They need friendship as well as spiritual assistance.
Pray for the followers of Christ
There are some Christians among the Tamil of Singapore. Pray they will find good churches in which to fellowship, and will grow in their love for Christ and in obedience to him.
Pray for the entire people group
Pray for Tamil workers to not be exploited by their employers. Pray for improved working conditions, also.
Scripture Focus
"For from the rising of the sun, even to its setting, My name will be great among the nations ... says the Lord of hosts." Malachi 1:11 |
