Sri Lankan Moor of Sri Lanka
The Moors trace
their ancestry to Arab traders who settled in Sri Lanka some time
between the eighth and fifteenth centuries. Fascinated by the scenic
splendor, Muslim merchants arrived in large numbers and some decided to
settle in the island, encouraged by the cordial treatment they received
from local rulers. Most lived along the coastal areas in peace and
prosperity. The Sri Lankan Moors possess a unique culture that
differentiates them from the dominant Sinhalese and Tamil ethnic groups
on the island. The culture of Sri Lankan Moors has been strongly shaped
by Islam, hence most customs and practices are dictated by Islamic law.
While preserving many of their ancestral customs, the Moors have also
adopted several South Asian practices.
Ministry Obstacles
Outreach IdeasThe Moors should better understand the full nature of Christ, the Son of God, diety. Also, the Gospel of grace is difficult to fully believe and accept by those who have been steeped in law and its requirements. Pray the Lord's Spirit will reveal these truths to the Moors. The main language of the Moors is Sinhalese, and there are many resources available in Sinhalese. The complete Bible has been available for many years, as well as the Jesus film, Gospel recordings, the God's Story video, etc. Workers are needed to carry these resources to the Moors of Sri Lanka.
Pray for the followers of Christ
There are no known Christian believers among the Moors. However, pray the Lord is even now preparing pastors and teachers to help those who will soon come to Christ. Pray these new believers will quickly become firmly established in the grace of Jesus Christ.
Pray for the entire people group
Thank the Lord for renewed peace on the island of Sri Lanka, and pray this peace will remain. Pray for reduced tensions between the major ethnic groupings on the island.
Scripture Focus
"Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance." Psalm 33:12 |
