Buriat, Mongolia of Mongolia The Buriat (or Northern Mongolian) people are descended from various Siberian and Mongolic peoples that inhabited the Lake Baikal Region of Siberia. Buryats rebelled against communist rule and collectivization of their herds in 1929. The rebellion was quickly crushed by the Red Army with loss of 35,000 Buriats. Some Buriats fled to Mongolia and resettled. Buriats love music, folk dances, chess, and sporting events. Their religious beliefs are a mixture of Shamanism and Buddhism.
