Akha, Pouly of Laos
The Pouly are
easily the largest Akha group in Laos, and were probably the first Akha
group to migrate to Laos. They claim there were some of their group
living in Laos from 1850, but the main migrations took place after 1900.
The twin strongholds of animism and ancestor worship predominate among
the Pouly Akha. They are especially afraid of two kinds of spirits: the
spirit of a child who dies before being named, and the spirit of a woman
who dies giving birth. They have a ceremony of healing for the family
of a sick person. They must sacrifice a minimum of 20 chickens, five
pigs and three eggs, and are required to pay money (1,200,000 kips, or
about $180) to the shaman. These ceremonies are extremely costly for the
Akha and may plunge a family into debt for many years to come.
Ministry Obstacles
Laos does not provide a ready welcome to outsiders who come to bring Christ to the people. Creative access approaches will be helpful.
Outreach Ideas
Please pray for Gospel radio to be widely available in the Akha language, and for the people to learn of these broadcasts. Pray they will be given understanding as they listen.
Pray for the followers of Christ
There are a few Christians among the Pouly Akha of Laos, a precious few. Please pray the Lord will protect their faith, and send them teachers to help them.
Pray for the entire people group
Scripture FocusPray the Akha will be completely set free from superstition and the bondage of worshipping ancestors and things that have no life in them at all. "Now to Him who is able to do exceedlingly abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen." Ephesians 3:20-21 |
