Lao in Laos The Lao belong to the Tai linguistic group which began migrating southward from China in the first millennium AD, and which are now the politically and culturally dominant group in Laos. Theravada Buddhism is a dominant influence in Lao culture, but many elements of Lao culture predate Buddhism. The government strictly censors content from the outside world, but many Laotians access the outside world through Thai television programs.
