Bokar of India

The Bokar tribe is a sub-tribe of the Adi. They are mainly concentrated in Mechukha, Monigong, Pidi, and Tato circles of Mechukha Sub-Division in India, bordering China in West Siang District. They have six clans: Yourgo, Yourko, Yoring, Gindodupa, Ropo, and Lupo. The Bokar are traditionally agriculturists. Pottery, basketry, and weaving are their crafts. Their traditional council (kebang or bango), headed by the kebang bbu or gam, settles village and intervillage disputes. They intermarry with neighboring communities like the Pailibo and Ramo. Some are now poultry farmers, and others have purchased knitting machines. They are generally rather prosperous.

Ministry Obstacles
A low literacy rate suggests the Gospel needs to come to the Bokar primarily in oral form. Many good oral resources are available in the languages they speak, such as Gospel recordings and the Jesus film.
Outreach Ideas
Perhaps workers will be able to contact Bokars who already are Christians, helping them to mature to the point where they can take the message of Christ to all individuals in their small community.

Pray for the followers of Christ
There are several Bokar individuals who have identified themselves as Christians to the Indian census. Please pray the Lord's Sprit will nurture these people, protecting their faith and sending them teachers to help them.

Pray for the entire people group
The literacy rate of the Bokar is said to be very low. Pray that parents will see the importance of educating their children, and pray for the availability of good schools.
