Malay, Riau of Malaysia
Riau is a
province of Indonesia. While most Riau Malays live on the mainland of
Sumatra, other Riau peoples live on the 3,214 small islands that
comprise the province of Riau Islands, and some live in Malaysia. The
Melayu Riau people make a living as fishermen and farmers. They have
been influenced by Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, and European cultures.
Islam influences almost every aspect of present day life. At the same
time, many common practices indicate the strong adherence to traditional
spiritual beliefs - for example, potions used to ward off evil spirits.
A shaman (called a bomo) is often asked to drive out evil spirits.
Ministry Obstacles
Outreach IdeasThe Malay have a long history of commitment to Islam which is not easily changed. There are a handful of Riau Malay in Singapore. Pray the Lord will burden them to reach their people with the message of the Salvation to be found in Christ. Pray for the followers of Christ Although there are probably no followers of Jesus today among the Riau Malay, please pray the Lord is now working in the hearts of many to come to Him as Savior and Lord. Pray they will be sent teachers to help them.
Pray for the entire people group
The Melayu Riau need improved farming practices for their land. Communication and ocean transport infrastructure are also pressing needs. Additionally, they need improved access to adequate medical services and midwives. Their standard of living is far below that enjoyed by more recent immigrants to Riau Province.
Scripture Focus
