At
least 110 people have died in Bangladesh in what residents are calling
the worst flooding in 30 years. U.N. and other agencies estimate that
3.7 million people have been affected in 19 districts, with 17,000
houses washed away and 65,000 others ruined by riverbank erosion. More
than 250,000 homes are reported damaged.
An
indigenous ministry that Christian Aid Mission assists is providing
rice, potatoes, cooking oil and other food items to flood victims in
Jessore District and Jamalpur District in the southwestern part of the
country. Each bag provides a two-week supply of food for a family of
five. “We are praying to the Lord so that we may stand beside these
helpless families,” the ministry director said. “We want to help 200
families, and we need for each family $23 only. So please pray to Lord
that we may do something for them.”
While
waters have begun to recede, further flooding is expected this month
from upstream rainfall in India and Nepal, whose rivers flow through
Bangladesh to the Bay of Bengal.
