At
least 60 people have died and 500,000 people have fled their homes
after the heaviest rains in a quarter of a century pummeled Sri Lanka in
the past week. The government reported 21 of 25 districts of the island
nation off the coast of India had been affected, and indigenous
ministries that Christian Aid Mission assists immediately began
providing relief items. One ministry leader bringing aid, who has a
church in the flooded Aranayaka area, reported 200 people dead,
including a 7-month-old who died in a landslide.
Another
indigenous ministry is providing dry foods like rice, dry fish, fish
tins, cereals and coconut. "Most people don't have food, water, shelter
and medication," he said. "We have to give them more dry foods. This is
very urgent need. One rice packet is $2, and a one-liter water bottle is
$1.50. We need nearly 1,000 water bottles. Please pray for these all
urgent needs."
