Ndengereko of Tanzania
The Ndengereko are an ethnic and linguistic group
based on the central coast of Tanzania, south of the Zaramo River and
north of the Rufiji River. Traditionally, music was the most widely
practiced art in their community. At any time of the day or night, some
music was being made, for ceremonial, religious, political, or
incidental purposes. Music was performed during funerals to praise the
departed, to console the bereaved, and for cleansing and chasing away of
spirits. Ancestors assume an important role in their belief system.
Ancestor spirits are remembered through various rituals and are believed
to exert significant influence on daily life. The Ndengereko are
Muslim, but their beliefs are mixed with traditional religions.Ministry Obstacles No scripture or other Christian resources are reported as available in the Ndengereko language. Outreach Ideas There are many mature evangelical Christians in Tanzania. Perhaps the Lord will lead some to the Ndengereko people, especially to those who are already Christians, in order to teach them and help them grow spiritually. Pray for the followers of Christ Please pray for those in the Ndengereko tribe who consider themselves to be Christians. Pray they will clearly understand the distinction that must be made between a cultural identification with the Christian religion and a true disciple of Jesus Christ. Pray for the entire people group Pray for a higher standard of living for the Ndengereko people, for better educational opportunities for the youth, and for improved employment opportunities for breadwinners. Scripture Focus "Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations." Luke 24:46-47 |
