Baggara, Dekakire of Chad The name Baggara comes from the Arabic Baqqara, the word for cattle. They are cattle herding Arabs. The Dekakire are one of the Baggara subgroups. The Baggara claim origin from Arabs in the Hijaz, the Red Sea coast area of the Arabian Peninsula, perhaps around 1100-1200 AD. They have been Muslims since the thirteenth century. The Baggara wear the clothes prescribed by the Muslim religion, and bury their dead facing Mecca. They are a very superstitious people, believing strongly in evil spirits.
