PAKISTAN (ANS – August 1, 2015)
– According to media reports, heavy monsoon rains, the rapid melting of
snow and outbursts from glacial lakes have led to flash floods and the
flooding of the Indus River in various locations across Pakistan.
The floods have affected 23 Districts across Pakistan with about 86 reported fatalities and many more people injured.
Chitral District in Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa and six Districts of Punjab province have been hit the
hardest, with a high risk of floods in Sindh province in coming days.
The Pakistan Army and
Government authorities are providing immediate response and they are
issuing early warnings/alerts on weather and flood advisories to
relevant disaster management authorities.
According to a story by Saqib
Yaqub of Jesus My Shelter, a Pakistani Christian organization that is
helping to bring aid to the flood victims and carried by Breaking Christian News (www.breakingchristiannews.com),
“Once again massive floods have hit Pakistan, and so far 86 people have
lost their lives in them. The swiftly rising water has already ravaged
about 800 villages country wide.
“District Jhang is one of the
districts of Pakistan that has been hit by a lot of flooding in the last
five years. People were just beginning to rebuild their lives due to
last years' disasters, but this year's flash flooding again hit them.
He went on to say that “Atthara
Hazari”, a tehsil of Jhang; which is an administrative unit, comprised
on a dozen union councils with 260-plus villages, is among the worst
affected areas.
“Authorities
have issued warnings [for people] to leave the entire areas before more
flooding hits,” stated Saqib Yaqub. “Hundreds of families could not
evacuate and were stranded in the flood waters. The Government is trying
to rescue the people through helicopters and motor boats. The livestock
remained the stranded and starving. (Due to stagnant water, various
diseases have broken out. And still more dangerous flooding could hit in
coming days.
“Today we saw a terrible thing,
when two people barely saved their lives from flood waters by reaching a
tree. There is an acute shortage of drinking water, food, medicines and
hygiene kits that has been reported.”
