GPN 05-07-2010

“Friendliness is one of life’s richest investments. “ Proverbs 18:24; Heb. 10:25. Well we have a whole weekend to invest. Greetings, Roberto Wijnhof

Praise God for the 19 Baptisms in the last month. One Moslem and 16 Hindus took baptism and witnessed for the Lord. We praise God that we could baptize them in the baptism tank of our Church at Surajpark for the first time. Pray for their spiritual growth and well being. India.

Approximately one million people in the world commit suicide every year. For the group 15-34 years of age, suicide is today one of the three leading causes of death in all countries. It is uncertain how many suicide attempts there are for each suicide death. Different studies estimate a number between 10 and 20. In general, there are more attempts per suicide among women and younger people. Research also show that around 80 percent of attempted suicides among young people are preceded by clear warning signs. Ask God to deliver those who have attempted to take their own lives. Ask God to silence every voice that is tempting people with phrases like, “You are worth nothing”, etc. Ask God’s truth to set every captive free from the claws of premature death.

Burmese political prisoner Ko Mya Aye urgently needs your prayers, and your help.

Ko Mya Aye is one of the leading pro-democracy campaigners in Burma, a prominent voice in the 88 Generation Students Group. He is currently serving a 65 year prison sentence for organising peaceful protests in 2007. He has reportedly been placed in a cell on death row, with no toilet or running water, and is denied exercise. Ko Mya Aye has suffered heart failure caused by angina, and requires urgent medical treatment. He is also suffering from hypertension and gastric problems. His medical condition is now believed to be critical.

At least 137 political prisoners are in poor health due to inhumane prison conditions, and are denied proper medical care. We urge you to pray for them.

The Home Affairs Department says it will spend R15 million on a public awareness campaign aimed at protecting children against paedophiles and child pornography in the run-up to the Soccer World Cup. The move is in line with the Films and Publications Amendment Act, which makes the use of children in pornography a crime. Praise God for the people in leadership of this nation who are willing to fight on behalf of the innocent and vulnerable. Pray that South Africans will keep watch over this situation in prayer and fasting.

This week is dominated by the UK General Election, but behind the scenes we continue lobbying our national politicians who have the power to alleviate suffering for believers of many kinds, including Eritrean refugees and Burmese dissident Ko Mya Aye.
CSW, politics and the polls

At CSW, our highly-trained advocates conduct detailed research and work closely with various local and international NGOs in order to maximise impact. By doing this, we’re able to partner with organisations around the world to counteract religious persecution at different levels.

While they’re working for religious freedom in their respective countries, we’re lobbying key decision-makers in the EU, UN and UK parliament to make political decisions that will influence oppressive governments to change their laws and policies, and in many cases the fate of individuals trapped in situations resulting directly from faith persecution. Our supporters play a crucial role in this process, reinforcing and strengthening CSW’s voice to ensure that the concerns raised are heard on a much larger scale.

Pray for our high level advocacy work using this week’s prayer diary
