Oromo, Yajju in Ethiopia

Oromo, Yajju in Ethiopia
The Oromo represent one of the largest of the Cushitic groups inhabiting the Horn of Africa. Cushitic speakers have inhabited parts of north-eastern and eastern Africa for as long as recorded history. "The Oromo were a very ancient race, the indigenous stock, perhaps, on which most other peoples in this part of eastern Africa have been grafted." In order to integrate with the imperial power and family, a large share of the Oromo converted to Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity during past centuries. Today, some Oromo groups are majority Christian and others are majority Muslim, including the Muslim Yajju.
Ministry Obstacles
To follow Christ within the Oromo community is to risk losing much that is important, including family and friends.
Outreach Ideas
There are many followers of Christ in other Ethiopian tribes and communities. Perhaps some will be burdened to carry the message of Christ to the Oromo. Pray to that end.
Pray for the followers of Christ
Pray for those who know and follow Christ among the Yejju Oromo community. Pray they will experience grace and peace, and will grow to know and love Jesus Christ. Pray they will have a desire to share what they have learned with their family and friends. Pray for tactful yet bold witness for Christ.
Pray for the entire people group
Pray the Oromo people will increasingly desire to learn more of Isa (Jesus). Pray he will reveal himself to them in various ways. Pray for workers to carry the good news of Christ to them.
Scripture Focus
"All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will worship before You." Psalm 22:27
