Malay, Cape in South Africa
Ancestors of
the Cape Malay came as hired workers and slaves to serve the Dutch
settlement, coming largely from Indonesia and Malaysia. Later, since
Islam was introduced in Indonesia as a way of protest against the
colonial powers, Islamic leaders from Indonesia were brought to the Cape
for imprisonment. They taught their fellow countrymen a lot about Islam
and helped to spread it at the Cape. The Cape Malay define themselves
as Muslims. If a person comes to know Jesus, he is no longer considered
to be a Cape Malay.
Ministry Obstacles
The Cape Malay are surrounded by peoples who are Christian. Yet their identity is bound up in their Islamic religion. Becoming a Christian can be viewed as a traitorous act.
Outreach Ideas
Many good Christian resources are available in Afrikaans, the language of the Cape Malay. Access to these is not the problem so much as lack of interest. Pray for interest to develop.
Pray for the followers of Christ
The few followers of Jesus among the Cape Malay need prayer support. Pray they will faithfully fellowship together for encouragement, and will develop into prayer warriors.
Pray for the entire people group
Pray the Lord will open the eyes of the Cape Malay to see Jesus as he truly is, the Son of God, deity. Only God's Spirit can reveal this to people.
Scripture Focus
"You purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation." Revelation 5:9 |
