Karakalpak, Black Hat in Uzbekistan
The name
"Karakalpak" comes from two words: "Kara" meaning black, and "Kalpak"
meaning hat. They refer to themselves as Qaraqalpaqs, whilst the Uzbeks
call them Qoraqalpogs. Karakalpaks are followers of the Sunnite Hanafi
sect of Islam. It is probable that they adopted Islam between the 10th
and 13th centuries. Karakalpaks are well known for their devotion to
their religion. Dervish orders are evident among them.
Ministry Obstacles
The Karakalpak have been Muslim for centuries, and their identity is, of course, tied to their religion.
Outreach Ideas
Christians can find ways to help the Karakalpak people with various physical and material needs, caring genuinely for the people.
Pray for the followers of Christ
Pray for the followers of Jesus among the Karakalpak community. Pray they will faithfully fellowship together, and will live holy, joyous lives in the power of the Lord's Spirit. Pray they will be a consistently faithful witness to their own people.
Pray for the entire people group
Pray the Karakalpak people will be able to prepare their children well for the changing conditions of the 21st century. Pray they make schooling a priority. Pray for employment opportunities.
Scripture Focus
"Give thanks to the Lord, call on His Name; make known among the nations what He has done." Psalm 105:1 |
