Akha in Laos
The Luma Akha
inhabit several villages in the Boun-Tai District of Phongsali Province
in northern Laos. They live in an opium producing area, and today, one
in ten Akha are said to be addicted to opium. In addition to being able
to recite their long genealogies, which reach back more than 60
generations, the Akha are also able to remember the migration routes
their ancestors took to arrive at their present locations. The Luma Akha
are animists and ancestor worshippers. One Burmese evangelist, when he
visited an Akha village in Myanmar, reported, "As we approached the
village, we saw evidence that the battle we would be fighting was
spiritual, not physical. Above the entrance way to the village were
animal skulls and demonic symbols.... altars around the perimeter of the
village still fresh with blood from sacrificed dogs, goats and
chickens."
Ministry Obstacles
Workers can expect spiritual opposition as they present Jesus to the Akha. They need to be prepared for this, but not intimidated.
Outreach Ideas
There are believers in tribes near the Luma Akha. Pray they will be obedient to the command of Christ to share the good news they have received.
Pray for the followers of Christ
Please pray for the few Luma Akha who are Christians. They need spiritual protection, and they need mentors and teachers to help them.
Pray for the entire people group
Please pray the Luma Akha will be set free from opium addiction, and will find other crops to raise that will generate as much profit as opium.
