Banjar in Indonesia
Although they are devout Muslims, the Banjar proudly
trace their origins to a legendary Hindu kingdom, the Negara Dipa. In
1526, Banjar Prince Samudera accepted Islam and took the name of Sultan
Suriansyah as a condition of receiving help from a Jawa army in
overthrowing his uncle. The Banjar people do not look positively upon
modern methods and technologies, nor do they mix much with other people
groups. This isolation has limited the development of education, health
care, sanitation, and water purification.Ministry Obstacles To follow Christ in this strongly Muslim people group is to risk losing so much that is important to a person, including friends, family, social status, and perhaps employment. Outreach Ideas Much prayer, coupled with ways to serve these people, is needed. Pray for the followers of Christ There may not be a single follower of Jesus among this large people group. Pray there will soon be many, that the Lord is even now preparing hearts to have faith to believe. Pray these new believers will become firmly established, not swayed by every wind of doctrine. Pray for the entire people group Pray the Banjar community will open up to outsiders, and will benefit by an improved standard of living. Pray for improved health care, clean water and good schools. Scripture Focus "Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, Who alone works wonders. And blessed be His glorious name forever; And may the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen, and Amen." Psalm 72:18-19 |
