Shaikia, Arabized of Sudan
The Shaigiya are a riverain agricultural people. They
claim to descend from Shayig Ibn Humaidan, who came from Arabia at the
time of the conquest of Egypt in the 7th century. The tribe's
traditional homeland lies on both banks of the Nile from Kurti down to
the Third Cataract, and in portions of the Bayuda Desert. The Shaigiya
are divided into twelve sections or sub-tribes, each descended from one
of the twelve sons of the founder, Shaig. Most children attend
government school. Women are usually the teachers, while the men are
farming. Children attend religious schools called Khalawi where they
learn and memorize the Quran, before attending government school. The
Shaigiya tribe speaks and writes in Arabic, using an accent which drops
the last letter of some words.Ministry Obstacles Sudan doesn't provide a welcome to Christian workers, so creative access approaches will be helpful. Outreach Ideas Perhaps the Shaikia tribe will discover the availability of scripture downloads in their language to phones and computers. Please pray they will find these. Pray for the followers of Christ There are a few individuals within the Shaikia tribe who identify themselves as Christians. Please pray these people will live holy lives, and will consistently demonstrate all of the fruit of God's Spirit. Pray for the entire people group Please pray for peace in Sudan. Pray also the Shaikia tribe will have improved medical care, and for adequate rainfall for their crops and livestock. Scripture Focus "Let the nations be glad and sing for joy; For You will judge the peoples with uprightness and guide the nations on the earth." Psalm 67:4 |
