Riang, Riang-Lang of Myanmar (Burma)
The Riang are
the only De'ang group who has never embraced Theravada Buddhism. The
majority of Riang today are animists. They believe spirits live in
objects of nature and must be placated before peace can be experienced
in their communities. Missionaries worked among the Riang in Myanmar
until they were expelled from the country in 1962. The Gospel of Mark
was translated into Riang in 1950. Few members of this tribe have
responded to the offer of salvation, however, and today there are no
known churches among the Riang in either Myanmar or China.
Ministry Obstacles
Christianity provides a very different worldview than does Animism or Buddhism. However, Animism has been referred to as "pre-Christian" and the transition to a more accurate worldview is not impossible.
Outreach Ideas
Perhaps Christian radio will be made available in the Riang language. Please pray for the funds and other resources needed to prepare and broadcast good quality programming.
Pray for the followers of Christ
Pray for the few followers of Jesus among the Riang people, that they will learn to live holy lives in the power of God's Spirit. Pray they will clearly understand their relationship with Christ is his gift to them.
Pray for the entire people group
Pray the Riang people in Myanmar and China will be set free from beliefs that have no basis in fact. Spiritual matters are spiritually understood, so pray that God will give them understanding.
Scripture Focus
"Do you not say, 'There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest?' Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest." John 4:35 |
