Wolof of Mauritania
The Wolof
Empire was a medieval West African state that ruled parts of Senegal and
the Gambia from approximately 1350 to 1890. The Wolof people's
traditional culture and practices have largely survived the colonial
era. The vast majority of the Wolof people are Sufi Muslims. Their
leaders, or marabouts, exercise a huge cultural and political influence
among most Muslim communities. The Islam of the Wolof is very tolerant
and puts an emphasis on meditation and spirituality.
Ministry Obstacles
The Wolof have been staunchly Muslim for generations. Also, Mauritania has very little Christian presence.
Outreach Ideas
Pray for Christian radio to be made widely available in the Wolof language and that people will learn of its presence.
Pray for the followers of Christ
Pray for the entire people groupThere may be a few followers of Jesus among the Wolof of Mauritania. Please pray that God's Spirit will nurture them and send teachers to them. Pray also for the others who will soon join their numbers. Pray for clean water and adequate rainfall for the Wolof. Pray for improved medical facilities.
Scripture Focus
" ... having an eternal gospel to preach to those who live on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people." Revelation 14:6 |
