Maranao, Lanao in Philippines
Maranao is the term used for the people of Lanao, a
predominantly Muslim region on the island of Mindanao. They are famous
for their artwork, sophisticated weaving, wood and metal craft, and
their epic literature. The word Maranao means "people of the lake."
Small communities of Maranaos, mostly traders, can be found in all major
towns of the Philippines. They are the descendants of Muslim Malays.
They are fair-skinned, probably attributable to Arab and Chinese
admixtures. The native Maranao have a fascinating culture that revolves
around kulintang music, a specific type of gong music.Ministry Obstacles To follow Jesus within this Muslim community is to invite criticism and ostracism, and may cause the loss of friendships. Outreach Ideas Perhaps the Christians among the Maranao people will grow in maturity and in numbers to the extent they will be able to effectively carry the Gospel of Christ to their own people. Pray for a church planting movement. Pray for the followers of Christ There are some among the Maranao community who know and follow Jesus Christ. Pray for them to be zealous as they learn the ways of Christ. Pray they will be united around the truth of Scripture, and be faithful witnesses for Christ among family and friends. Pray for the entire people group Pray the Maranao community will increasingly be drawn to Isa (Jesus) as they read the Koran. Pray for curiosity about this Man. Pray the Lord will reveal himself to them.
