KASUR, PAKISTAN (ANS – October 23, 2015)
-- A married Pakistani Christian deaf and dumb woman has allegedly been
gang raped by three Muslim men who were said to have come to her home
in a Pakistani village when all the male members of the family were away
working, and brutally attacked her.
“The
shocking incident took place at a village called Bonga Ghanda Singh,
Wala Kasur,” said a spokesperson for the Pakistan-based Legal
Evangelical Association Development) LEAD, in a message to the ASSIST
News Service. “The poor woman asked the rapists for mercy, but they
mercilessly made her target of their lust.”
A
close member of the victim’s family has since met with Sardar Mushtaq
Gill, a Human Rights Defender, who heads this free legal aid and
advocacy group, and has requested legal assistance for the case against
the attackers.
The
man told Mr. Gill that a First Information report (FIR) has been
registered with the local police and one of the accused has been
arrested, but the two other men have escaped and the police are now said
to be hunting for them.
“However,
in almost every one of these kind of cases, police either fail to act,
or sided with the rapists, and sometimes, witnesses are pressurized to
retract from their original statement or political pressure is built up
on complainant for compromise,” explained the LEAD spokesperson. “A
number of Christian women and children in Pakistan are being mauled in
silence, and consequently, their stories usually never surface, and when
activists speak on behalf of such victims, they almost all tell us that
they have been victimized at the hands of extreme oppressive powers.”
The
spokesperson added, “We at LEAD provide free legal assistance and
advocacy to those victims of sexual assaults who cannot afford to bear
the expenses and costs occurred to fight for justice and LEAD's work is
only possible with your support and it requests to support our work for
such victims.”
