Socotran in Yemen

The Socotran live on the island of Socotra, which is located in shark-infested waters between the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. They differ from mainland Arabs, and are believed to be a mixture of Greek, Portuguese, African, and Arab. The Socotran engage in fishing, pearl diving, and small scale farming. The island has long fascinated scientists because of its high numbers of rare plant species. There is evidence that Christianity was introduced to the people of Socotra as early as 535 AD, when a Nestorian Bishop resided on the island. By 1680, Christianity was virtually extinct, due to both oppression by the Arabs and the neglect of the Nestorian patriarchs.

Ministry Obstacles
The island of Socotra is largely off limits to outsiders.

Outreach Ideas
Christian radio and television, plus Christian websites, may offer the only good means of access to the people of Socotra Island. Prayer is needed for these media to be provided, and for hearts of the people to receive the message.

Pray for the followers of Christ
There may be no followers of Jesus among the Socotran people today. But pray for those the Lord will call to himself. They will need much prayer support since access to them is quite limited. Pray for Gospel radio with excellent programming to be available, and that they will be aware of these broadcasts.

Pray for the entire people group
Pray the Socotran people, largely cut off from outside influences, will have opportunities to learn of Christ. Pray that Christian radio and television will increasingly be available, and for hungry hearts to listen and view.
