How Long?

How Long?

“The Lord said to Moses, ‘How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the signs I have performed among them?’” – Numbers 14:11
Prisoners in North Korea

*Drawing by a former North Korean prisoner, depicting North Korean prisoners eating plants in a labor camp.

Imagine yourself a Christian living in North Korea, a land that is barren... a land that is silent. You have no church, no freedom to share your faith, no Bible, and no contact with other Christians. You are alone.

We can only imagine that Christians in North Korea today are echoing these exact words found in Numbers, but instead of God crying to Moses, they are crying to God! “How Long?” In our perspective, Christians in North Korea have been suffering for long enough. But they are not without hope. In the book of Isaiah God tells us through His Word some of His plans and promises for His people, including His people in North Korea.

How Long?

Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, was once called the Jerusalem of the East. Beginning on January 14, 1907, when a group of Korean Christians and Western missionaries met in Pyongyang for a Bible study …God began to move. Realizing their sin, and the need for Jesus, the group fell on their knees in repentance. In that instant a revival began that lasted 40 years.

When Japan was defeated in 1945 during World War II, Korea was divided into the North (under Soviet Union rule) and the South (under US rule). After the North established the Democratic People’s Republic (DPRK) in 1948 severe persecution began. That was over 65 years ago…in comparison the Israelites wandered in the desert for only 40 years.

In the book of Isaiah God tells us through His Word some of His plans and promises for His people.Holding on to these promises join today in intercessory prayer, through His Word, for North Korea.

THE LORD WILL MAKE NORTH KOREA A PRAISE IN THE EARTH

The Lord has made proclamation to the ends of the earth; “Say to the Daughter of Zion, ‘See, your Savior comes’! See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him.’” They will be called the Holy People the Redeemed of the Lord; and you will be called Sought After, the City No Longer Deserted. – Isaiah 62:11-12

North Korea is the most dangerous country in the world to be a Christian. And yet the Word of God continues to go out, especially in the cities near the Chinese border. Every year North Koreans risk their lives to cross into China. If they are fortunate enough to arrive safely, the danger continues. But if they fall under the care of Christian’s operating safe houses, the gospel message is shared… for many this is the first time hearing the name of Jesus. After receiving Christ, many return to North Korea, at great personal risk, to bring the gospel message to their family at home.

THE LORD WILL GLORIFY HIS CHURCH IN NORTH KOREA

…So He became their Savior. In all their affection He was afflicted, and the angel of His presence saved them; in His love and in His mercy He redeemed them, and He lifted them up and carried them all the days of old. – Isaiah 63:8-9b

On the surface, the fruits of God’s work are not evident in North Korea today. The church may be thought of as “desolate” because of its suffering and lack of visible strength. And yet, His Spirit is there, working in silence. Open Doors supports North Korean Christians in secret with Bibles, books, education and relief aid. Often we receive thank you letters from underground church leaders; oneNorth Korean Christian wrote:

“I am very proud to see our believers’ faithful lives becoming more mature. Their lives are in danger and still they follow the Lord. This could have not been possible if it wasn’t for your endless effort and love. Please continue to pray for us.”

GOD’S SPIRIT WILL NEVER LEAVE NORTH KOREA!

“As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the Lord: “My Spirit which is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your offspring, nor from the mouth of your offspring’s offspring,” says the Lord, “from now and forever.”
 –Isaiah 59:21

Imagine not being able to pass on your faith to your children? In North Korea this desire is dangerous for both believers and their children. If their faith is discovered, they, with their children, are sent to prison and forced into hard labor. Other North Korean children may have been abandoned by their parents due to hardships, for others, their parents may have died. Living on the streets struggling to survive; Timothy, shares his story:

“Like so many children, I was separated from my parents. My father had to flee the country in a hurry. For years, I lived on the streets. Every day, I had to manage to find food. I only slept for a few hours each night and tried to stay awake in order not to die of hunger. I survived by helping to carry luggage at stations. After some time, I realized that I had no future in North Korea. While fleeing to China, I was detained by the border police. They took me back to North Korea where the guards tortured me severely. I kept praying to stay alive, because I had discovered that there was a God. After two weeks, I was released but because of the torture, I was no longer able to stand. My grandmother paid a woman to carry me across the river into China on her back. In the end, I gained freedom and I was reunited with my father. Whatever situation you are in, do not give up, but keep praying!”

GOD WILL REVEAL HIMSELF TO ALL
“I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me; I was found by those who did not seek me. To a nation that did not call my name. I said ‘Here am I, her am I.’” Isaiah 65:1

Kim Il Sung, the founder of the DPRK, understood the power of worship and set himself up to be the only one.. Statues of him were erected; people were required to bow down before them. Kim Il Sung created a belief system called Juche which twisted the Holy Trinity of Christianity by teaching that Kim Il Sung is god, his son Kim Jong Il is the Christ figure, and the ideology of Juche replaces the Holy Spirit. Kim Jong Il referred to it as “Kimilsungism.” All North Koreans are indoctrinated with this belief system from cradle to grave.  But God has permitted Himself to be found by people who did not seek Him. That grace… guaranteed on the cross of Jesus Christ… is available to everyone, including the leaders of North Korea.

JOIN IN PRAYING THIS PRAYER
Father God, when will the promise, “For they will be a people blessed by the Lord.”(Is 65:23) be fulfilled completely? Will it be upon the return of Your Son Jesus Christ when all earthly kingdoms will be destroyed and only Your Kingdom remains?  Father, we know that we are to wait for Your perfect time, but our hearts break for those in North Korea who are blinded by the lies. Father, remove the scales from their eyes so that they can see Your glory. We join today in prayer for a mighty, overwhelming outpouring of Your Spirit over the Korean peninsula, believing as we come to You on our knees, and petition on their behalf, that the next great revival in Korea will come soon, and that Your splendor will be spread over the entire nation. Praying in Jesus Name, our Redeemer. Amen.

Tuhan, Ajarlah Kami Berdoa

Amin. (t/Yudo)

Being Christ's Ambassador

Being Christ’s Ambassador Through the Storm
“I am honored to be God’s herald of love and the channel of other Christians’ generosity around the world.” (Abdul Hossain)
When Cyclone Sidr unleashed its wrath on Southern Bangladesh on November 15, 2007, Abdul lovingly extended help to his fellow countrymen. What makes Abdul’s gestures remarkable, is that Abdul served time in prison because of these same countrymen’s false accusations toward him. Yet, Abdul didn’t hesitate to extend a helping hand, but his assistance was a surprise and shock to others. No one expected that it would be Hossain who would come to their aid.
“I was astonished,” Abdul said, as he described his emotions when he first saw the ruins left by the cyclone in the village where he grew up. It was the worst disaster that anyone had ever experienced. Tall trees had their roots ripped from the ground and were thrown all around. Houses made of hay and tin were scattered everywhere. Roads were blocked by debris. It was nearly impossible to reach those who needed help the most.
Pity and love filled his heart as he cried out to God. “Not only did they lose everything, but their spirits also seemed to have vanished.” When relief goods were insufficient to meet the vast needs, he felt helpless, and could only console the villagers by telling them of God’s mercy and generosity.
Nonetheless, the rescue team abundantly met the needs of hundreds of survivors. One of them was a 90-year-old man who exclaimed upon receiving his relief bag, “How can I carry this? It is so big! God bless you,” hugging Abdul afterwards.
A response to the gospel from his countrymen is what Abdul hopes for after the cyclone. Forgiving the people who accused him, Abdul says that he holds no grudges. He hopes to love his countrymen into the Kingdom of God.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust."

‘Prayer is profitable whenever it is practiced.’ (James 5:16; Acts 6:6)
I wish you a blessed week. Marga Hooglugt
Please pray for quick healing and recovery of Mr. F.C. from a prolonged inflammation of his pancreas. He is in the hospital for months. Pray God for strength for his wife, who is in the last months of her pregnancy of their second child. Mr. E.E.
Pakistan: Pray for me, that God will heal and bless me, spiritually, physically and financially. Pray that God will use us for His glory to make a change in Pakistan. Pray for healing and God’s provision in the need of my brother P.W. in South Korea, who had an accident and lost his four fingers. Pray for Mr. L.G.K. in Kuwait. I am exhausted and weary in a very long and difficult battle for my oldest son D. and my granddaughters, Kelsey and Kallie. Please pray God to move their mothers heart, and enable her to let my son see the girls on a regular basis. He is divorced for 2 years. My son just wants that his relationship with his daughters will be restored. We need a miracle! Mrs. H.K.
Turkey: Pray for a radio ministry that encourages secret and persecuted believers by providing encouraging stories of persecution. The radio episodes are relevant not only to believers, but also to Muslims who listen to the broadcasts. Since the Malatya murders several years ago, many believers have begun to consider the cost of following Christ. This program provides them with examples of courageous faith.
Pray that Mr. v.E. will receive healing and deliverance by the love of Jesus from a traumatic experience in his boarding period.
Eritrea: Christian Leaders Arrested in Asmarag – At least 20 church leaders were arrested at their homes in Eritrea’s capital on Thursday, January 17th, in an apparently coordinated move by authorities, and some have reportedly been imprisoned. The church leaders were from a variety of denominations, including the Full Gospel Church and the Mesret Kristos (Mennonite) Church. The situation in Eritrea has deteriorated dramatically in the last few months. Major commodities like electricity, water and grain are in short supply, and the government is to be unstable. In January, a group of dissident soldiers demanding political change tried to seize control of the Ministry of Information, and three army officers were arrested. Eritrea’s relations with Ethiopia have also worsened since the death of Ethiopian leader Meles Zenawi last August. Pray for God’s peace in Eritrea.
Suriname: Ask God to restore the contact with my son. He lived in the Netherlands for 18 years and I haven’t heard anything of him. Pray that God will help my son, Mr. I., to find a job here in Suriname. Pray for my daughter, that she will find a serious life partner.
Please pray for God’s wisdom in dealing with people who constantly lie and gossip. Mrs. S.E.
Eastern Africa: Safe House Raided – Authorities in a closed country in Eastern Africa raided a safe house and church at the end of January. ‘They came in a group with the police’, wrote the pastor who runs the safe house. ‘They accused us that we are burning and putting down the book of Quran, and they slapped my face. When they try to find their book they found only the Bible.’ The interrogators also asked the pastor’s wife and another Christian woman present what they believed. The women told them they were Christians. The authorities finally left after several people from the community came to tell them that the Christians were good people, but the authorities closed down the meeting place. Please pray for the pastor and his family and the Christians, who will likely have to find a new home and safe house. The pastor requests prayer for protection and boldness.
Mrs. G. has a lot of pain and sorrow. She does not know the Lord yet, but asks for our prayer through the Prayer line of GPN, for God’s strength and comfort. Pray that she may know the Lord personally.

The Muslim soldier who became the 'Apostle to the Pygmies'

Edited and adapted by Mark Ellis He was a Muslim soldier who fought against Christians until a Scripture verse stopped him in his tracks and set him on a new path in life. Waswa Munubi grew up in Uganda. During his youth, he was an avid marijuana smoker. In military service, he fought against Christians until he came under the influence of Alexander Mackay, a Scottish missionary with the Church Missionary Society. Challenged to read the New Testament, one verse in the Sermon on the Mount grabbed his heart in an unexpected way. “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. (Matthew 5:13) After he read that passage, Munubi surrendered his life to Jesus Christ and was born again. At his baptism, he took the name “Apolo,” after the eloquent Alexandrian Jewish believer who “was fervent in spirit, spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus” (Acts 18:25). Apolo left military service and began his discipleship training under the Anglican Church. He almost married, but his fiancée died unexpectedly before their wedding. After her death, Apolo decided to take the Apostle Paul’s advice in 1 Cor. 7:32, so he stayed single, and committed himself to serve the Lord wholeheartedly and completely. He was the first to volunteer as a missionary to the neighboring region of Toro. After that, he was sent to Boga, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. To get to Boga, Apolo walked over the Rwenzori Mountains, then he traveled another 50 miles through the forest. He only took his Bible and his hoe on the arduous journey. The Bible fed him spiritually; the hoe allowed him to find work along the way. When he arrived at Boga, Apolo began to boldly proclaim the gospel. However, many were offended by his preaching, because he spoke against traditional practices and behavior, such as sorcery, polygamy, and drunkenness. He even offended Chief Tabaro, who gave the order that no one should give Apolo any food, in the hope that Apolo would die of hunger or leave his village. Undeterred, Apolo remained steadfast and loyal to the Lord’s calling on his life and continued his ministry. Against all odds, he watched in amazement as the Lord provided for all of his needs. Then a strange incident happened. Chief Tabaro’s sister died by accidently falling onto a spear that was carelessly left in the tall grasses at a building site. Apolo was blamed for her death, imprisoned and beaten, then sent back to Uganda where he was placed on trial for murder. One night in the prison, Apolo had a life-changing dream. “I saw Jesus shining like the sun, He said to me, ‘Take heart, for I am with you,’” Apolo recalled later. At the same time he had this powerful dream, God miraculously changed Chief Tabaro’s heart. Inexplicably, the chief requested that Apolo be released from prison and returned to his village. Through Apolo’s influence, the chief became a believer himself and the two men became close friends. After these dramatic events, Apolo’s heart was revived and encouraged. Full of the Holy Spirit, he began to preach with even greater boldness. Wherever he spoke, people gave up their old customs, repented, and began to follow Jesus. Apolo declared the year 1921 as “the year of the Gospel.” God began to touch his heart about reaching the pygmy tribes who inhabited forested areas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Faithful to God’s call, he went to live among the Walese, Wanyali, and Wambuti as a friend. When he preached, he often told them about another unusual encounter with Jesus: “Christ appeared before me as a man. It was like seeing a man who was my brother. He said to me, ‘Go, preach in the forest, because I am with you. I Am who I Am–this is my Name.’” Due to the Lord’s favor and an anointing propelled by the Spirit, Apolo became known as “the Apostle to the Pygmies” for his work among the Bambuti people of the Ituri forest in the eastern part of the country. He died in 1933 at Boga, his mission field. Contrary to local customs, he was buried with his head toward the west (not the east) at his request. This signaled his desire that the Gospel should go to the western part of the country. Others, inspired by his example, continued his work throughout the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Yossa Way, Project Luke Fellow and Professor of Theology at the Institut Supérieur Théologique Anglican in Bunia, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Where is My Bride?

Where is My Bride?
Alice Smith

“For your Maker is your husband—the LORD Almighty is His name—” (Isaiah 54:5, NIV).
There are few things more memorable than a wedding. As the beautifully decorated church fills with people, the bride and bridegroom make last-minute preparations for the momentous event. Finally the moment is here. After months of preparation, the wedding begins. Accompanied by music the bridesmaids and groomsmen walk the aisle and take their places. Next, the pastor and the groom enter. The guests smile with approval at how handsome and proud the groom looks. Now everyone is poised to see one person—the bride.

The wedding march begins and as the music swells the doors swing open and there she is in all her beauty, dressed in pure white. Her gorgeous gown flows gracefully as she makes her way down the aisle toward her groom. Everything about her is perfect. Her hair, her nails, her make-up. The audience stands in honor of her and turns to look. Admiring whispers can be heard as she is escorted to the front. At the altar the bride and groom face the pastor and the ceremony begins.

A new covenant—a new beginning! Two become one. The invited guests listen with delight as the happy couple pledge themselves to each other and promise God that they will honor this commitment forever!

This is the start of a great new life. But it’s only the start. Everyone knows that the end of the ceremony is only the beginning of the marriage. The marriage bond is actually consummated behind closed doors, in the private place. There the bride gives herself freely and intimately to this man she loves.

The wedding scene I have just described is analogous to our intimate journey with the Lord Jesus. At salvation, we were wed to Him. We are His bride and He is waiting for us to come to Him. Paul used the same image when he said, “I am jealous for you, just as God is; you are like a pure virgin whom I have promised in marriage to one man only, Christ himself” (2 Cor. 11:2, GNB). God is our Bridegroom, and today He is asking, “Where is My bride? Why doesn’t she come into the quiet place of prayer and spend time with Me?” Christ is the only groom I know whose bride will hardly speak to Him.

We often appear to be more interested in other things, yet we wonder why our churches are empty, our ministries powerless and our altars barren. It is because we are giving ourselves to other lovers! Hear the burden of God’s heart: “I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me through the desert, through a land not sown” (Jer. 2: 2, NIV). Yet Israel didn’t want to be faithful to God. The Lord was grieved. “Long ago you broke off your yoke and tore off your bonds; you said: ‘I will not serve you!’ Indeed, on every high hill and under every spreading tree you lay down as a prostitute” (Jer. 2:20, NIV).
The indictment is far worse for New Covenant people. In the Old Testament the people of God didn’t have the Holy Spirit living in them as we do. The Lord is crying, “Where is my bride?” We might be busy with home, career, children or making money. Doing church can even become a god. We can be more in love with the work of the Lord than with the Lord of the work. We, His bride, have lifted our skirt under every spreading tree to commit adultery with the world. We have given our hearts to the idolatry of houses, cars, children, amusement and money. These have captured our attention from our heavenly Groom.
Perhaps you have been so caught up in the world and the affairs of life that you have all but forgotten your Bridegroom. Stop right now and gently whisper your apology to Him. Ask your heavenly Groom to forgive you for being attracted to and distracted by other things. If you are thinking, I didn’t know I was unfaithful to Jesus, but right now I want to renew my wedding vows, then write your name in the blanks below. Slowly and deliberately read aloud your vow to Jesus. Once you have done this, read aloud what the Lord Jesus, your Groom, pledges to you.

I, _____________________, take You Jesus to be my lawfully wedded husband. To have and to hold from this day forward. I pledge before God and these witnesses (heavenly witnesses) to be Your loving and faithful Bride. I will love and honor You, cherish and obey You and forsaking all others, I will keep myself totally for You, Jesus. In plenty and in want, in joy and in sorrow, in sickness and in health, through adversity or suffering, I will trust You. I give my whole heart to You, Lord, in token and pledge of my constant faith and abiding love.

I, Jesus, take you _________________ to be My chosen wedded bride. To have and to hold you from eternity past, and forever. I have formed you and called you out of darkness. I bought you with my life and I have fulfilled the law for you. I am preparing a place for you, that where I am, you may be also. I will never leave you or forsake you. Call unto me and I will answer you. I will always be a shield about you. I have given you my name and all authority to use it. You are my beloved. My blood I give for you, in token and pledge of my constant devotion to you.1

It bears repeating: You are Husband and wife! Now enjoy the love of your life!
