Unable
to work due to age-related illnesses, elderly Syrian refugees in Turkey
are almost entirely dependent on aid for their survival. At the same
time, untreated cataracts are increasingly taking vision away from them
as they are too poor to obtain medical care. An indigenous ministry
providing relief items to Syrian refugees in tent camps that are
springing up in Turkey seeks assistance to connect more refugees with
doctors. “The wife of one elderly man is taking care of him, but he
cannot walk,” the indigenous ministry director said. “He’s always
slipping on the floor, and he’s lost vision in two eyes because of
cataracts. He also has arthritis.” The ministry seeks funds to provide
prescriptions and medical care as well as food, clean water and other
aid to keep refugees as healthy as possible.
