As
the battle continues for Mosul, the Islamic State’s last major
stronghold in Iraq, signs of the violence that ISIS wreaked on a nearby
village remain. Since the Iraqi military began retaking Mosul on Oct.
17, 2016, more than 144,500 people have been displaced, most of them in
desperate need, according to U.N. figures. A ministry based in Iraq is
providing refugees in camps outside Mosul with food, clothes,
medications, heaters, blankets, tents, clean water, infant formula and
diapers, as well as Bibles and Christian coloring books. “We need almost
everything,” said the director of the ministry, which can purchase
items locally. “Needs are not being met, and people are struggling.
There are a lot of people and organizations helping, but it’s like a
drop of water in the sea.”
