Li, Ha of China
The speakers of the Hlai language live on the western end
of Hainan Island, and are part of the larger Li nationality. Hainan was
a hunter's paradise until recently; and even now a large number of wild
animals can still be found in the more mountainous regions. For
centuries the Li rebelled against Chinese rule of Hainan. Most of the
Christians on Hainan Island are Ha Li. The Ha Li god, Pa-Thung, "is a
good god, and lives in some unknown place. But his agents, devils sent
to watch the villages, are ever present and always live in a nearby
cave, in a river, in the jungle, or on a nearby mountain. The villages
have paid priests, or witchdoctors, who complain to Pa-Thung when local
devils spitefully send thunder, lightning, and rain or when they bring
famine or sickness to the people."Ministry Obstacles No scripture is reported to be available in the Hlai language. Outreach Ideas Gospel recordings are available in the Hlai language. Perhaps workers will take these to the people, and stay with the people long enough to instruct them in the Gospel of Christ. The Christians already in this tribe very much need to be taught from scripture. Pray for the followers of Christ "Many Li churches are filled with rampant heresies and cultic activities....the Li Christians lack familiarity with the Bible." Please pray that scripture will soon become available in the Hlai language, and that Christians will have a desire to study it. Pray for the entire people group Pray the Ha Li people will be set free from fear of spiritual forces, and will learn of the God who not only created them, but loves them to the extent of dying for them.
