Sunda in Indonesia
The Sunda are the largest Indonesian unreached people
group. Almost all Sunda are Muslims. In many areas, Islam is mixed with
Sunda traditional customs. The Sunda seek to protect their harmony with
the natural world. In the legend of Lutung Kasarung, there is a belief
that God incarnated a little of himself in the world in order to protect
the life of man. This incarnation is called dewata (gods).Ministry Obstacles
Following Jesus in a strongly Muslim society invites the loss of much that is important in this life: status, friendships, family, employment, educational opportunities.
Outreach Ideas
Christians can assist the Sunda by helping them to become more productive in farming and livestock production, and also with small business development.
Pray for the followers of Christ
There are only a few followers of Jesus among the very large Sunda community. Pray for them to cling strongly to the truth of Scripture, to be firmly established upon God's character and promises. Pray they will faithfully fellowship together even in spite of opposition.
Pray for the entire people group
Data from the West Jawa Statistical Department shows a high rate of poverty. Because of this, the Sunda need help and guidance to raise their standard of living. There is a need for agricultural investment and modernization, and in development of small to medium-sized businesses.
Scripture Focus
"Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance." Psalm 33:12
