Hmu, Northern in China
The main center for the Northern Hmu is the city of
Kaili. The Chinese people have despised the Hmu people for centuries,
and have called them "men-dogs." When a Hmu dies, a shaman "opens the
road" by giving directions to enable the soul of the deceased to reach
heaven after a long journey. The Gospel of Christ has never taken root
among the Northern Hmu. In 1898 missionary W. S. Fleming and the first
Hmu convert, Pan Xiushan, were murdered. 32 Christian inquirers were
seized and beheaded.Ministry Obstacles
In the past the Northern Hmu have strongly resisted the good news of Christ. Probably they did not understand it well. This history of resistance may linger today.
Outreach Ideas
Christian workers can tell stories from Scripture to these people, and use videos and recordings as well.
Pray for the followers of Christ
There are some followers of Jesus among the Northern Hmu people. Pray they will be nourished by the Lord's Spirit, and will faithfully fellowship together. Pray they will have nothing to do with the deeds of darkness, living as children of light.
Pray for the entire people group
Pray the Lord will prepare the hearts of the Northern Hmu to receive the good news of Christ when it comes. Pray they will be given understanding.
Scripture Focus
"Tell of His glory among the nations, His wonderful deeds among all the peoples. For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised." 1 Chronicles 16:24-25
