Hitu of Indonesia
The Hitu live
in five village areas along the north coast of Ambon island. They
cultivate cloves, nutmeg, sago palm, coconut, various other spices, and
several fruits. Most Hitu live near the sea in beach-side houses, but
some live along the road leading to the city of Ambon. Most of their
land is governed by tribal law and is regarded as tribal land. Not all
Hitu receive formal education. Even where schools exist, many finish
only elementary school. Hitu is the historical entry-point of Islam into
the Malukus. For this reason, nearly all Hitu people are Muslim. They
believe that later they will be judged both on their knowledge of the
Qur'an and on their good works. But like most Muslim people in Maluku,
the Hitu are strongly influenced by even more ancient animism.
Ministry Obstacles
The Hitu language has no scripture available, and other resources such as Gospel recordings are also not available.
Outreach Ideas
Perhaps mature Christians in nearby people groups will be led to help disciple the Christians already present among the Hitu. These Hitu Christians can take the Gospel to all of their tribe once they become more mature in the faith.
Pray for the followers of Christ
There are a number of Christians among the Hitu. Please pray they will be strengthened in the faith, and will represent Christ well before family and friends. Pray they will be zealous to know and serve Jesus.
Pray for the entire people group
The Hitu have very few chances to improve their job skills. Lack of electricity and dependable clean water supply also hinder development of Hitu society. Please pray for these things and for better educational opportunities.
Scripture Focus
"For from the rising of the sun, even to its setting, My name will be great among the nations ... says the Lord of hosts." Malachi 1:11 |
