Shawiya of Algeria The Shawiya (pronounced Shah-wee-ya) is one of the numerous Berber groups in North Africa. The major feature that binds the Shawiya together is their language. Since the 8th century, they have been dominated by the Arabs, who forbade expressions of their language and culture until recent years. Life for the Shawiya is simple. They have long been mocked by their countrymen for being simpletons, yet are known for their wisdom.
