Bajau, West Coast of Brunei
The Bajau have traditionally been known as
sea-nomads, involved in extensive maritime trading and dwelling in
boats. However, the great majority of Bajau are now sedentary house
dwellers and have adopted an agrarian way of life. In many ways the
Bajau are a very individualistic people, but the shared identity of
Islam creates a powerful unifying bond among them. Traditional beliefs
(spiritism) interact in complex ways with Islamic beliefs (the more
recent system). Most people subscribe to a variety of both traditional
and more current beliefs, and it is difficult if not impossible to
separate them. Various folk beliefs from former times still have some
prevalence among the West Coast Bajau.Ministry Obstacles The worldview and religion of the Bajau is tightly bound to their self-identity, making change quite unlikely for most individuals. Outreach Ideas Pray that Christians of Malaysia and Indonesia may develop an interest in the Bajau people of Brunei, and will find ways to minister to their needs. Pray for the followers of Christ There is an indication there may be a few followers of Christ among the Bajau people. They very much need our prayers. May the Lord send someone to help them become firmly established in the faith. Pray for the entire people group Pray the Bajau people will be set free from fear of going out at night and fear of ghoulish creatures that seek to eat babies or the flesh of recently deceased people. Scripture Focus "I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples." Psalm 108:3 |
