Zaramo, Zalamo of Tanzania Zaramo marriages are usually polygamous and divorce is frequent. Family names are passed down through the mother. Their society is divided into clans which recognize a common descent. The children always belong to the clan of their mother rather than their father. A great event for the family and clan is the birth of a child, especially if this child is a girl, since this ensures the passing on of the family name. Zaramo are predominantly Muslim and observe basic Islamic practices, however, many have mixed Islamic beliefs with their traditional ethnic religion.
