Bania of India
"Bania" is something of a generic term, and there are many Bania communities. The Bania trace their history back about 5000 years. About 50 communities have a traditional caste council, election to which is by a voice vote among 44 communities and by secret ballot among six. Widow remarriage is allowed among some 48% of Bania communities, and divorce has gained social approval among 33 communities.
